SIDE
Side
was the most important harbour of Pamphylia. In the 2nd
and 3rd century B.C. it was a meeting place for pirates
and at the same time an important slave market. In 333
B.C. Alexander the Great conquered the city. After the
fall of the Roman Empire, Side lost its importance. The
city gained importance once more as a bishops' residence
in 5th century A.D. and during the Byzantine Empire period
it became the capital of Pamphylia. The decline of the
city started with the sudden attacks of Arabs in 7th and
8th century A.D.. In 1200 Side was still in ruins.
